If you are looking for a Shopify alternative in India, the most useful first step is to be specific about what is not working. Shopify is a capable global platform, and for many sellers it is the right choice. Indian merchants who look elsewhere usually have one or more of a short list of reasons: GST invoicing that is not built in, a payment setup that relies on a third-party gateway with an extra platform fee, support that is chat-only on most plans, a pricing structure that grows with sales, or a wish for guided setup and local integrations. Each reason points to a different kind of alternative, and some are better solved without leaving Shopify at all.
This guide helps you decide whether to switch, what to look for and how to move if you do. It sets out what Shopify itself says about GST, payments, pricing and support in India, as read from its own pages on 3 October 2026, the four types of alternative with what each vendor states about itself, a criteria list built for Indian sellers, a cost comparison with worked numbers, a step-by-step migration plan with an SEO redirect strategy based on Google's own guidance, a decision table by merchant type and the questions to ask every candidate. ShopMate is one of the alternatives and the publisher of this guide, so we say plainly where it fits and where it does not.
Quick answer: Look for an alternative only if you can name the problem: GST invoices, payment fees, support, cost at your sales level or setup help. Then choose a type that solves it, compare total cost at your volume, test GST invoices and checkout in a trial, and plan the migration as a project with redirects, data export and a rollback. If your main problems can be fixed with an app or a plan change, staying may cost less than moving.
What Shopify does well
Fairness first. Shopify is a large, mature platform, and these are real strengths for many merchants:
- A broad app ecosystem. Its App Store lets you add features, including GST invoicing, without custom development.
- Published rupee plans. Its India pricing page lists Basic, Grow and Advanced plans in rupees, with monthly and yearly billing and a trial that starts with 3 free days, then ₹20 a month for 3 months.
- Round-the-clock chat. Shopify says chat is available 24/7 on all plans (Shopify, Contact Shopify Support).
- Scale and global selling. A global platform suits brands that plan to sell abroad or build heavily with developers.
If these match your needs, the reasons below may not apply to you.
Why Indian merchants look for alternatives
These are the points, drawn from Shopify's own pages, that most often prompt the question. They are facts about how the platform works in India, not criticisms.
1. GST-compliant invoices need an app or service
Shopify's help page on GST in India says: "Shopify doesn't create a GST-compliant bill. To create a GST-compliant bill, use a local third-party GST invoicing service or an app from the Shopify App Store." It also says the initial tax settings are a starting point, not intended to be used until reviewed and updated, and that HSN codes can be stored in the HS tariff code field, which requires at least six digits (Shopify, GST in India). A seller who must issue GST invoices on every order therefore adds an app or service, with its own cost and setup.
2. Payments run through a third-party gateway, with an extra fee
Shopify Payments, Shopify's own payment service, is available only in a list of countries that does not include India, and Shopify says that if your country is not listed you need a third-party payment provider (Shopify, Supported countries for Shopify Payments). Its India pricing page lists a rate for third-party payment providers on each plan: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus, separate from the gateway's own charges. Because Shopify Payments is not available in India, this rate is likely to apply to Indian stores using an outside gateway; confirm with Shopify.
3. Support channels differ by plan
Chat is available 24/7 on all plans. Shopify's support page says phone support and email support are for the Plus and Retail plans, with typical email response times of 48 hours, and that you cannot request a callback or phone Shopify directly on other plans. For a first-time seller who values a person to call, this matters.
4. The pricing structure scales with sales
A plan fee plus a percentage on payments plus app subscriptions grows as sales grow. At some sales levels this is cheaper than a flat commission, and at others it is not, as the cost section below shows.
5. Indian logistics, COD and POS depend on setup
We have not verified how Indian couriers, cash on delivery and point-of-sale work on Shopify in India, and they can depend on apps and partners, so test them in a trial. Shopify says that Shopify POS can be used in nearly every country but that Shopify Payments and integrated POS hardware are available only in select regions (Shopify POS).
Do you really need an alternative? A self-test
- Does the GST invoicing app you use produce correct invoices for intra-state, inter-state, discounted and returned orders, and does your accountant approve?
- Are the third-party payment fees and app subscriptions acceptable at your current sales level?
- Do you get the support you need on your plan, at the hours you need it?
- Are your Indian couriers and cash on delivery working smoothly with your current setup?
- Do you sell offline, and does your point-of-sale solution share stock reliably with your store?
- Are you growing in a way that makes your current cost curve better or worse?
- Do you have developers who benefit from Shopify's ecosystem?
- Do you sell abroad, which a global platform serves well?
If most answers are comfortable, fix the one or two weak spots, perhaps with a better app or a plan change, before taking on a migration. If three or more are uncomfortable, an alternative deserves a proper look.
Four types of alternative
| Type | Examples | Best when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| India-focused SaaS | ShopMate, Dukaan, Zoho Commerce | You sell mainly in India and want local payments, shipping and GST handled | Smaller ecosystems than a global platform |
| Other global SaaS | Wix and similar builders | You want a simple builder and may sell internationally | Check India-specific payments, GST and pricing currency |
| Open-source self-hosted | WooCommerce | You have technical help and need deep customisation | Hosting, security, updates and plugins are your job |
| Custom build | A bespoke store | You have unusual requirements and a technology budget | Cost, time and ongoing maintenance |
What a few vendors state about themselves
These are marketing statements as read from each company's own page on 3 October 2026. We have not tested these products, and they may have changed.
- Zoho Commerce offers a 14-day free trial and lists payment integrations including Zoho Payments, PayPal, Stripe, PayU and Razorpay, and shipping partners including Shiprocket, FedEx, DHL and UPS; its homepage, as we read it, does not mention GST invoicing or a point-of-sale system, so ask (Zoho Commerce).
- Dukaan describes itself as an enterprise ecommerce platform for businesses, with themes, plugins, its own delivery service for pan-India shipping and iOS and Android apps; the page does not state pricing, payment methods or GST handling (Dukaan).
- Wix, on its global ecommerce page, mentions automated tax calculation by customer location, shipping labels from a variety of carriers, a retail point-of-sale with synced inventory, and ecommerce plans priced in US dollars; the page does not mention India (Wix eCommerce), so check its India offering and rupee pricing.
- WooCommerce is open-source software for WordPress, free to download, but you must supply hosting that meets its requirements (WooCommerce on WordPress.org).
We deliberately do not rank these, and none of these vendors has reviewed this guide. Use the criteria below to test each one yourself.
Twelve criteria for an Indian seller leaving Shopify
1. GST invoicing built in, and correct
Every registered seller needs a tax invoice with the particulars in Rule 46 of the CGST Rules (CGST Rules, 2017, Rule 46). Ask to see invoices for intra-state, inter-state, discounted, business-buyer and returned orders, and check numbering. Our guides to GST invoices for online stores and to automated GST billing explain what to test.
2. Payments and fees
Check the gateway options (Razorpay, PayU and others), whether UPI, cards, net banking, EMI and wallets are supported, and whether the platform adds a fee on top of the gateway's charges. UPI processed about 20 billion transactions in August 2025 according to Wikipedia's UPI entry, so a smooth UPI checkout is not optional.
3. Shipping, COD and returns
Count the couriers you can actually use, check pincode serviceability for prepaid, COD and reverse pickup, and see how non-delivery reports are handled. Our guides to choosing shipping partners and reducing RTO show what to test.
4. POS and offline sales
If you have a shop or stall, check whether the point-of-sale shares stock with the store, and how it behaves when the internet fails. See our guide to retail POS and ecommerce integration.
5. Design and customisation
Compare how much you can change in themes and layouts, and whether you need developers for changes you make often.
6. Apps and ecosystem
List the apps you rely on today and find the equivalent in each candidate, either built in or available. Count the monthly cost of the replacements.
7. Data export and import
Check how products, variants, images, customers and orders can be brought in and how long that takes. Ask whether the vendor can load your catalogue for you or provides a bulk import, and who does the work.
8. SEO continuity
Moving platforms changes URLs unless you plan carefully. Ask how redirects from old URLs are handled, and whether page titles, meta descriptions, canonical tags and sitemaps are editable.
9. Support and onboarding
Compare support hours and channels, and whether setup is self-serve or guided. Test support with a real question.
10. Cost at your volume
Compare total monthly cost at your sales level, including apps, gateway fees and tax; see our guide to commission versus monthly plans for the method.
11. Reliability and performance
Ask about uptime commitments, festival-season preparation and page speed on mobile.
12. Legal and data protection
Check where customer data is stored and how it can be exported. India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 requires notice, consent and reasonable security safeguards (DPDP Act, 2023, MeitY), and under the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020 sellers must display specified business and grievance details (see Trilegal's analysis).
What does it cost? A worked comparison
The comparison below uses Shopify's India prices as shown on its pricing page on 3 October 2026, with yearly billing: Basic at ₹1,499 a month plus 2% for third-party payment providers, and Grow at ₹5,599 a month plus 1%. It adds an assumed ₹500 a month for a GST invoicing app, because Shopify's help page says it does not create a GST-compliant bill, and compares them with ShopMate's published 5% commission, before GST. It covers platform charges only; gateway charges apply on both and are left out. The app price is an assumption, not a quote.
| Monthly sales | Shopify Basic + GST app | Shopify Grow + GST app | ShopMate (5%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹50,000 | ₹2,999 | ₹6,599 | ₹2,500 |
| ₹1,00,000 | ₹3,999 | ₹7,099 | ₹5,000 |
| ₹2,00,000 | ₹5,999 | ₹8,099 | ₹10,000 |
| ₹5,00,000 | ₹11,999 | ₹11,099 | ₹25,000 |
The workings: at ₹1,00,000 a month, Basic is 1,499 plus 2% of 1,00,000 (₹2,000) plus ₹500, which is ₹3,999; Grow is 5,599 plus 1% (₹1,000) plus ₹500, which is ₹7,099; ShopMate is 5% of 1,00,000, which is ₹5,000. The break-even between Basic with the app and ShopMate is (1,499 + 500) ÷ 0.03, about ₹66,600 a month, and between Grow with the app and ShopMate it is (5,599 + 500) ÷ 0.04, about ₹1,52,000 a month. Below those levels the commission costs less on platform charges alone, and above them Shopify's lower percentage wins.
Honest reading: for small and early-stage stores, a commission model with built-in invoicing is often cheaper, and for larger stores a plan with a low percentage fee is cheaper, so the right choice depends on where you are and where you are going. The table leaves out 18% GST on ShopMate's commission, any tax on Shopify subscriptions, themes, other apps and point-of-sale charges. ShopMate's pricing is a flat 5% commission plus 18% GST on every order, with no setup fee and no yearly maintenance charge (ShopMate pricing); ask how the commission applies to returns, shipping and counter sales.
Migration: the project behind the decision
Switching platforms is a project, and its success depends on the plan. Allow at least four weeks for a small catalogue.
What moves, and what does not
| Item | Usually moves | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Products, variants, images, prices, stock | Yes, by export and import or by the new vendor | Clean your data first; check variants, SKUs and HSN codes after import |
| Product descriptions and SEO fields | Yes, if included in the export | Review titles and meta descriptions manually for key pages |
| Customers | Often, as contact data | Passwords generally cannot be moved; customers will need to reset them |
| Order history | Sometimes | Keep an export for records, even if the new platform does not import it |
| Discount codes and gift cards | Often not | Recreate active ones and tell customers |
| Reviews | Depends on the app | Check how they are stored and exported |
| Theme and design | No | Rebuild with the new platform's themes |
| Apps and automations | No | Replace each one or do without |
| Tax settings, shipping rules, payment gateway | No | Set up and test again |
| Domain | Yes, by pointing it to the new store | Plan the switch carefully to limit downtime |
SEO: keep the traffic you have earned
URLs usually change when you change platforms, and old URLs that stop working lose their ranking and their visitors. Google's guidance for site moves with URL changes recommends building a mapping from old to new URLs using your sitemaps, server logs and analytics, using server-side permanent redirects (such as 301 or 308) where possible, keeping redirect chains short, submitting a new sitemap in Search Console after redirects are active, monitoring crawl errors and traffic, and keeping redirects in place for as long as possible, generally at least one year (Google Search Central, Site moves with URL changes). It also notes that temporary fluctuations in ranking are normal during a move.
A simple redirect map, with an illustrative example, looks like this:
| Old URL (example) | New URL (example) | Type |
|---|---|---|
| /products/blue-cotton-kurta | /product/blue-cotton-kurta | Permanent redirect |
| /collections/kurtas | /category/kurtas | Permanent redirect |
| /pages/shipping-policy | /shipping-policy | Permanent redirect |
| /blogs/news/how-to-style-a-kurta | /blog/how-to-style-a-kurta | Permanent redirect |
Before you choose a new platform, ask whether it lets you create these redirects, how many it supports and whether it keeps your product and category URLs similar. If a platform cannot redirect old URLs, expect a traffic drop that could take months to recover.
A four-week plan
| Week | Focus | Finish by the end of the week |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Audit and choose | List products, apps, integrations, discount codes and top-traffic URLs; shortlist platforms; run trials with GST invoice, UPI and COD tests; decide |
| 2 | Build | Set up the new store; import products; configure tax, payments, shipping and policies; replace essential apps; prepare the redirect map |
| 3 | Test | Place real test orders for every payment method; check invoices with your accountant; test mobile layout, emails, returns and the redirect map on a staging copy if available |
| 4 | Cut over | Announce to customers; switch the domain at a quiet time; activate redirects; submit the sitemap; monitor errors, orders and traffic daily; keep the old store accessible for fixes and records |
Cut-over and rollback
Choose a low-traffic day, and not a festival week. Lower the domain's time-to-live setting in advance so the change takes effect quickly, keep the old store intact and ready for several weeks, and write down exactly how you would switch back if checkout failed. Place a live order the moment the new domain goes live, and check payment, invoice, shipping label and email, before you tell the world.
Mapping your Shopify setup to a new platform
Before you migrate, write down how your current store is built. Shopify uses its own vocabulary, and each concept needs a counterpart on the new platform, or a decision to drop it.
| In your Shopify store | What to look for on the new platform |
|---|---|
| Collections | Categories or collections, with the same grouping and, ideally, similar URLs |
| Product variants and options | Variants with their own SKU, price and stock; limits on the number of options |
| HS tariff code field holding HSN codes | A proper HSN field on each product that flows to invoices |
| Tags and metafields | Custom fields or attributes; check whether they import and where they appear |
| Discount codes and automatic discounts | Coupon rules (percentage, fixed, minimum order, usage limits) and flash sales |
| Customer accounts | Registration, login by OTP or password, order history and wishlists |
| Notification emails | Order, shipping and refund emails with your logo; editable text |
| Abandoned cart emails | Whether built in or needing an app or service |
| Checkout customisation | Fields you add at checkout, such as GSTIN for business buyers |
| Shipping rates and zones | Courier integration, rate tables, free-shipping thresholds and pincode checks |
| Payment gateway setup | Razorpay or others connected, with COD limits and fees |
| Analytics and tracking tags | Where to add Google Analytics and advertising pixels |
| Staff accounts | Roles and permissions that match who does what today |
Use this as a worksheet. For each row, mark whether the new platform has the feature built in, has it through an extra tool, or lacks it, and what that costs you in money or manual work. A candidate that scores well on the headline features but forces five manual workarounds a day is more expensive than it looks.
Replace your apps one by one
List every app on your current store with its monthly cost and its purpose. For each one, decide among three outcomes: the new platform covers it natively, you need a replacement and its cost, or you will do without it. Add the replacement costs to the new platform's price before you compare totals. Check two further things: whether any app holds data you will lose when you leave, such as reviews, loyalty points or wishlists, and whether you must export that data before you cancel the app.
Which alternative fits which merchant?
| Your situation | Often a fit | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Small or growing store, mainly India, needs GST invoices and Indian payments out of the box | An India-focused SaaS with built-in invoicing | Smaller app ecosystem; confirm every feature you rely on |
| Established brand with high, steady sales and developers | Staying on Shopify, or WooCommerce or custom for control | Fees and effort rise with customisation; compare totals |
| Retailer with a shop and a store | A platform with integrated POS and shared stock | Offline behaviour; counter commission terms |
| Seller who wants guided setup | A platform with assisted onboarding | Longer setup than self-serve; agreement steps |
| Brand selling mostly abroad | A global platform | Indian GST and logistics extras for domestic orders |
| Technical team that wants ownership | Open source such as WooCommerce | Hosting, security and updates are yours |
Questions to ask every candidate
- Can you show GST invoices for intra-state, inter-state, discounted, business and returned orders, and explain how invoice numbers are formed?
- Which payment gateways are supported, and does the platform add any fee on top of the gateway's charges?
- Which couriers can I use, and how do pincode checks, COD, returns and non-delivery reports work?
- Do you offer point-of-sale that shares stock with the store?
- How will my products, customers and order history be imported, and who does the work?
- Can I set up permanent redirects from my old URLs, and is there a limit?
- What are the support hours, channels and response times, and is setup help included?
- What is the total monthly cost at my sales level, including apps, gateway fees and tax?
- Is there a contract, a lock-in or a cancellation fee?
- How can I export everything if I leave?
Common mistakes when leaving Shopify
- Switching for a problem an app could fix. Try the cheaper fix first.
- Ignoring SEO. Launching without redirects throws away years of ranking.
- Underestimating app replacement. Each app you relied on needs a substitute or a decision to drop it.
- Skipping the GST invoice test. Wrong tax on live orders is costly.
- Cutting over in a peak week. Migrate when traffic is low.
- Forgetting customers. Tell them about the new store, the password reset and any changed discount codes.
- Closing the old store too soon. Keep it for records, returns and fixes.
- Comparing only headline prices. Use total cost at your volume.
Where ShopMate fits, and where it does not
ShopMate is an Indian multi-tenant ecommerce platform. Each merchant gets a branded storefront and admin panel on their own domain, Razorpay payments with settlements to the merchant's own account, 40+ shipping partners covering all India pincodes, GST-compliant invoicing, coupons and flash sales, an offline POS, analytics and a procurement module, all available from day one in a single plan (ShopMate). Support is available 24/7 (About ShopMate). Onboarding starts with a 7-day free trial and a demo call, after which a digital agreement follows, and setup of your store, domain, email, payment gateway and shipping takes 5 to 7 business days, with the team guiding you through adding your products.
It tends to fit if you sell mainly in India, want GST invoicing, Razorpay, Indian couriers and POS in one plan, prefer guided setup and want to pay only when you sell.
It tends not to fit if:
- you want to build and launch yourself in an afternoon, because onboarding is assisted;
- you depend on a large third-party app ecosystem, because ShopMate builds features in;
- your sales are high and steady, where a plan with a lower percentage fee may cost less, as the table above shows;
- you sell mostly outside India;
- you need a self-serve bulk product import, because in the admin we found a product export but no import, so ask the team how your catalogue would be loaded and what redirects from your old URLs are possible.
ShopMate launched in 2025 and has 50+ merchants, so ask for a demo, speak to the team about your category and test the checkout and invoices before you commit.
Frequently asked questions
Why do Indian sellers look for Shopify alternatives?
Common reasons are that GST-compliant invoices need an app or service, that Shopify Payments is not available in India so a third-party gateway and an extra fee apply, that phone and email support are limited to higher plans, and that costs grow with sales. Others simply prefer guided setup or local integrations.
Does Shopify support GST in India?
Shopify lets you set GST rates and store HSN codes, but its help page says it does not create a GST-compliant bill and recommends a local third-party invoicing service or an app from the Shopify App Store.
Is Shopify Payments available in India?
No. India is not among the countries listed on Shopify's help page, which says that if your country is not listed you need a third-party payment provider.
What is the best Shopify alternative in India?
There is no single best one. Choose by the problem you need to solve, compare total cost at your sales level and test GST invoices, payments, shipping and migration in a trial.
How do I move my store without losing SEO?
Map every old URL to a new URL, use permanent server-side redirects, keep them in place for at least a year, update internal links and sitemaps, submit the new sitemap in Search Console and monitor crawl errors and traffic, following Google's site move guidance.
Can I export my data from Shopify?
Shopify provides export tools in its admin for products, customers and orders; check the current options in your account. Whatever the platform, confirm before you commit that you can export everything.
How long does migration take?
For a small catalogue, plan at least four weeks: audit and choose, build, test and cut over. Larger catalogues, many apps or custom design take longer.
Is ShopMate a good Shopify alternative?
For Indian merchants who want built-in GST invoicing, Razorpay, Indian couriers and POS with guided setup and pay-when-you-sell pricing, it can be. It is a newer platform with a smaller ecosystem and assisted onboarding, so test it against your own list of requirements.
