Threading a needle may seem like a simple task, however, it can be daunting for someone who does not have the skills or a person new to sewing. Whether you are darning a skirt or mending a pair of slacks, getting the thread through the needle is the first step. In this blog I will show you the easiest way to thread a needle and offer some tips to make the process as smooth as possible.
What is needed:
Needle (choose one that is the correct size for your thread)
Thread (choose polyester, cotton, or any kind of sewing thread)
Scissors (for trimming the thread)
Instructions:
First Step: choose the correct size needle for your thread. Needles come in many sizes. Large needles are for bulky threads and have large eyes, medium needles have smaller eyes and used for regular thread, small needles have very small eyes and used for very fine thread. Beginners should start with the medium needle.
Second Step: cut a piece of thread that is about 20-26 inches long. Any longer and the thread can become tangled. Use the scissors to cut the thread at an angle so it will go through the eye of the needle easier.
Third Step: Moisten the end of the thread. You can do this by moistening the end of your fingertips and taking the very end of the thread and rolling the thread between your fingertips. If you are having a hard time with this process. You can take the very end of the thread and pass it between your lips. This will make the thread easier to pass through the eye of the needle.
Fourth Step: Hold the needle steady and carefully between your thumb and forefinger in one hand, and the thread in the other hand also in your thumb and forefinger while resting your hand on a flat surface to keep your hands steady.
Fifth Step: Carefully guide the thread through the eye of the needle and push it completely through the opening to the other side. Grab the thread from other side and pull completely through.
Sixth Step: (optional) Once you have pulled the thread through you pull until both ends of the thread are even. You are done!
Tips for a smoother Threading
Use a needle threader: this is a small yet efficient tool that helps with threading a needle by pulling the thread through the eye of the needle.
Proper lighting: Good lighting is key; it will help to have a bright and proper light source at hand when trying to thread a needle. Natural light is best; however, a table lamp will work also.
Prepare the thread: trim and fold the very end of the thread to create a sharper edge, this will make it easier for the thread to pass through the eye of the needle.
Moisten the thread: If you are struggling to get the thread through the needle try to moisten the thread on the very tip to help it slide through the eye of the needle much easily.
